How Tempguard Works

A Patented, Easy-to-Use, Insulated Concrete Test Cylinder Molding System

Works Year Round – In the Coldest and/or Hottest Weather

Cold Weather Results:

Test results prove that TempGuard’s excellent insulation capabilities keep freshly made concrete test cylinders warmer for longer periods.

Example: Fresh 73.5F concrete placed into traditional plastic cylinder molds at an ambient outdoor of 25F descended to 32F in about 5 hours. The same concrete in TempGuard molds took about 25 hours  to reach 32F.

This means that timely cylinder retrieval and lab delivery will not be as critical when TempGuard molds are used. The need for curing box use (and maintenance) may also be reduced.

Warm Weather Results: Just as impressive!

When TempGuard and traditional plastic cylinder molds were cured side-by-side on a mildly warm summer day, the temperature of the concrete in the plastic cylinder molds swung above and below that in the TempGuard cylinder molds by as much as 30 F!

The actual project concrete’s temperature profile does not gyrate up and down like this. TempGuard concrete specimen temperature more closely match the project concrete’s temperature. This makes for a more realistic and accurate measure of the project concrete’s strength.

Consistent Test Cylinder Temperature Equals Better Field Curing Results

TempGuard can provide the most accurate field curing because, being insulated, the TempGuard mold minimizes the effects job site temperature swings have on the concrete test cylinder. This is a particularly valuable benefit during the coldest and warmest months.

Plastic products have been shown to create test cylinder temperatures that fluctuate to a much greater degree than those of the actual project concrete, creating the potential for erroneous compression test results and/or the need for costly, time-consuming retesting. TempGuard’s insulating properties maintain a more constant cylinder temperature, providing a more realistic, and dependable, representation of the project concrete’s actual strength.

TempGuard’s temperature control capabilities mimic those provided by curing boxes, eliminating the need to employ this more expensive, vintage method.

TempGuard molds meet ASTM Standards C31, C192 & C470

Regular plastic cylinders are known to easily cause wildly fluctuating test cylinder temperature profiles. This is not what is happens to the actual concrete that was placed on the project.  Because TempGuard keeps the concrete test cylinder at a more consistent and constant temperature, which better matches the project concrete, you get a more realistic representation of the project concrete’s actual properties. Everyone (from the owner, the engineer, the testing lab and the supplier) will have more confidence in the concrete’s strength.  Consistent cylinder temperatures equals better field curing!

TempGuard Insulated Molds Are Your Best Cylinder Testing Tool Investment

  • Generate more realistic, and dependable, test cylinder strength results
  • Protect from the effects of temperature swings as well as curing boxes,
    and better than plastic cylinders
  • Provide consistent performance regardless of environmental conditions
  • Are particularly effective on extremely hot or cold days
  • Require no special instruction or training to use
  • Reduce chances of retesting, costly job shut-downs or other delays
  • Not the least of all, cost less per test application than any acceptable alternative method
